My Story: The Thread That Connected Every Dot

I will be honest. I did not plan a portfolio career. It happened because I kept following what genuinely interested me, and only in hindsight did the pattern become clear.

My career began in consulting. From there I moved into product support, then into building products, then into digital transformation, and eventually into founding my own company. On paper those sound like five completely different careers. In many ways they were.

But there was always one thread running through every role, every pivot, every reinvention.

Domain expertise. And a deep passion for connecting with users and understanding their pain points: the gap between what they needed and what they were getting.

That thread did not change. The context around it did. The tools changed. The title on my business card changed. The size of the problems changed. But the core of what I had to offer stayed consistent.

That is the secret of the portfolio career that nobody tells you. You are not starting from scratch every time you pivot. You are building on a foundation that travels with you.

AI Changed Everything, Especially for Founders

Now as a founder I wear more hats in a single day than most people wear in a week. Strategy. Product. Marketing. Customer conversations. Operations. Finance.

Traditionally that would have been impossible for one person. You would hire specialists for each domain, outsource, and hope the other lanes were running smoothly.

AI has fundamentally changed that equation.

Today I use AI to automate repetitive tasks, build product prototypes, run marketing campaigns, analyze user feedback, and explore domains I had never been formally trained in. Things I previously had little to no exposure to.

AI is the great multiplier. It does not just help you do your existing job better. It expands the number of jobs you are capable of doing.

A consultant who deeply understands an industry can now use AI to build a working product prototype with no engineering degree required. A product manager can run their own marketing campaigns. A teacher can launch and scale an online course business. The barriers that used to keep people locked into one lane are being systematically dismantled.

What remains? The things that cannot be automated: judgment, taste, empathy, domain knowledge, and the lived experience of truly understanding a problem. Those are exactly the things a portfolio career is built on.

The World Has Already Moved On

The linear career path was showing cracks long before AI arrived. Now the data makes it undeniable.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that structural transformation will affect 22% of today’s total jobs by 2030, displacing 92 million roles even as 170 million new ones are created. PwC’s Global AI Jobs Barometer, which analyzed close to a billion job ads from six continents, found that workers with AI skills now command a 56% wage premium over those without.

The response from workers globally has been swift. More than 40% of professionals now report having more than one income stream. The freelance workforce has reached 1.57 billion people worldwide. In Asia Pacific, over 60% of millennials and Gen Zs have already taken on work beyond their primary job.

• You own your trajectory. Rather than waiting for a promotion that may or may not come, you actively shape your own story.

How to Start Building Yours

You do not have to quit your job tomorrow. The best approach is gradual and intentional.

• Start with what you already know. Your existing skills are the foundation. What could you consult on, teach, or freelance in right now?

• Identify your golden thread. What is the core value you bring that travels with you across contexts? That is your anchor.

• Use AI as your multiplier. Pick one new domain AI can help you enter and experiment. Build something. Run a campaign. Create a prototype.

• Test before you commit. A freelance project or small side venture can validate an idea before it becomes your livelihood.

• Build in public. Share your work and your learning. A strong personal brand makes opportunities come to you.

• Think in skills, not titles. The job title on your business card matters far less than the transferable skills in your toolkit.

The portfolio career is not a back-up plan. For more and more people around the world, it is the plan.

The linear career path was not a law of nature. It was a product of a particular era, one where industries were stable, technology moved slowly, and staying in one lane made sense.
